According to what I have read, not only surrounding the Zimmerman-Martin case but in several other instances, Florida needs to revisit its "Stand Your Ground" law. Before it was passed, many police officers and officials opposed it on the grounds that it essentially would legalize vigilante-ism, and such seems to be the case. Since passage of the bill, the rate of "justifiable homicide" in Florida has tripled. In fact, in many cases, possibly including Zimmerman's, police have been reluctant to prefer charges as soon as they hear "self defense" raised as justification for taking a life. That said, it would seem that the Sanford PD did not even bother with minimal standards of investigation as evidenced by the fact that Trayvon Martin went to the morgue as a John Doe, this despite the presence of his cell phone at the scene. It will be interesting to say the least to see how the trial, should it come to that, plays out. Meanwhile, the media and public at large would do well to engage in dialogue regarding all facets of the criminal justice system, not only in Florida but nationwide.

Stang, first of all, I've stopped reading blogs where the type is white on black because they give me a headache. Tried to see if there is a setting to change it here, but don't see it.

One thing I can say is, this is an unfortunate story on myriad levels. It's hard to say what will happen. Look at Casey Anthony :-/

Best wishes to you in all you do, and I hope you have a nice weekend.

Stang,
A couple of points are worth mentioning. One is that after the Stand Your Ground law took effect, "justifiable homicide" rates in Florida tripled, Another is that despite having Trayvon Martin's cell phone and its contact details, police sent his body to the morgue as a John Doe. (As a parent, I can easily imagine the unease of his father who must have wondered why his son was taking so long to return from a simple errand.) As to that Second Amendment, it begins: " A well-regulated militia..." and therein lies one particular rub. States that pass laws such as the one in Florida say essentially that if a person passes a criminal records check, he or she is competent to carry or at least own a gun of some sort. So we wind up with a Zimmerman who knows how to shoot it but has little to no idea WHEN to use it. Worse, most accounts of the events suggest that his actions either provoked or helped lead to whatever confrontation transpired. "Well-regulated" then means to me that people must be educated to the fact that with the RIGHT to bear arms come RESPONSIBILTIES. Of course, educating them may be regarded as infringing on their "right to keep and bear arms".

Great collection of responses, and a novel approach, Stang. Well done.

I largely agree with what you've said here, with one caveat. I'm not yet convinced Zimmerman needs to be charged, especially in light of the information coming to light from the witness known as "John." What I hope happens is that a thorough investigation is conducted and that whatever justice is served is a result of that. I also hope the public finds out what the investigators find out so that we can all get some closure on this case.

I haven't listened to the tapes, so I can't speak to racial slurs being used, but certainly that would elevate this to a hate crime. I've got some issues with hate crime legislation (namely that it excludes women and that it criminalizes thought/speech), but since it is law, I would hope he would face charges for that if it is found he did indeed use slurs. Equal application of the law and all that.

My 2 cents.
